When it comes to all things fashion, hair, and beauty, trends are constantly coming and going. So while the Kardashian-Jenner sisters may be introducing bicycle shorts as a fashion statement one moment, new trends are emerging the next, poised to become the next big thing of summer 2019.
Unsure what these upcoming trends are? Here’s a hint: They’re totally groovy, baby.
That’s right, the ‘70s are back this summer with a bit of disco magic sprinkled into all of the latest hair, fashion, and beauty trends. To get the scoop, we spoke with beauty experts.
With their tips, you won’t be scorched by these hot summer trends. Instead, you’ll learn how to rock them with ease so they don’t cramp your style.
2019 Summer Trends: Put Your Fresh Face Forward
With its beach days, rosé nights, and unicorn-shaped pool floaties, summer may be a season most people look forward to, but it’s also a time that brings about extreme heat that wreak extremehavoc on your makeup. This means melting makeup and sweat-, dirt- and oil-caused blemishes.
So really, there couldn’t be a better time for ‘70s-inspired beauty trends to encourage more women to go fresh-faced than this summer. Not only will skipping the makeup save you time and money, it’s also good for your skin, explains Dr. Yoram Harth, board certified dermatologist and Medical Director of MDacne to Lively.
“The proper function of the skin depends on the unobstructed flow of the sebum from the oil-glands to the surface of the skin,” says Dr. Harth. “If the openings of these oil-glands are clogged, the sebum and bacteria accumulate inside, thus increasing the risk for breakouts.”
If you’re not ready to give up makeup cold turkey, don’t sweat it; simply opt for lighter products that are oil-free. This could mean trading in your heavy foundation for a lightly tinted BB cream.
The Summer Beauty Hack for Those with Oily-Prone Skin
While dermatologists recommend that people with oily or blemish-prone skin avoid makeup as much as possible during the summer, there is a beauty loophole they can use: Oil-free primer.
“Oil-free primers absorb the excess oils on your skin and create a smooth base for your makeup,” says Dr. Harth. “Your makeup can glide evenly on top of a primer, which means it’ll help you cover all your pimples and get a smooth, finished look.”
Those with blemishes can also use active foundations with salicylic acid in them. “These products combine an oil-free foundation for coverage with a medical grade salicylic acid for treatment,” adds Dr. Harth. “Salicylic acid unclogs your pores and prevents acne pimples.”

Hydrate for a Healthy Glow
Achieving glowing skin starts on the inside. Aid your hydration journey by adding Vital Proteins Collagen Water to your wellness routine. Available in Original, Strawberry Lemon, Lemon Ginger, Blackberry Hibiscus, and Blueberry Mint flavors, our Collagen Water contains 10g of collagen and is an easy way to stay hydrated.
“Adding Vital Proteins collagen powder or collagen drinks help give the skin the extra boost it needs to give it that glow,” says Natashah Torki, a licensed esthetician and COO and co-owner of Beauty by Dolly.

Another way to attain a gorgeous glow — one that won’tbe mistaken for sweat — is to always have oil-free wipes on hand. Blotting papers work, too, although they are less effective than wipes at removing oil.
Dr. Harth also advises on using products that contain beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) or alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs): “These mild acids will remove dead cells from your skin, increase light reflectance of the skin and make it look brighter and more glowing.”
Hair Trends that Pay Homage to the ‘70s and ‘90s
It’s not just the ‘70s that are popping up in different summer trends. The ‘90s are back as well. Fans of Sex and the City will understand that Carrie Bradshaw would totally freak out over this hair trend making a comeback: Yep, we’re talking about scrunchies!
“This nod to ‘90s fashion is expected to be a hot trend this summer,” says Hollee Wood, a licensed cosmetologist and hair blogger at Holleewood Hair. If you want to rock the look this summer, it’s best not to overdo it with other throwback hairstyles. Instead, opt for a classic ponytail or modern looks.
“Half-up high ponytails, space buns, side braids, and top knots are all fun ways to rock the scrunchie in 2019,” says Wood.

The Most Popular Hair Color Trends
While a lot of people usually opt to go lighter for the summer, Wood says darker colors are actually coming out on top. “All-over chocolate brown is becoming quite popular, as are darker shades of blonde hair,” says Wood.
Along with this, balayage, pastel, and vibrant rainbow colors are also still going strong, adds Wood: “Colorful dip-dye (colored hair tips) will likely become more popular as people like Taylor Swift have been rocking this look lately.”
Another hot color trend hairstylists are noticing is warmer tones, explains color expert Meg Esposito to Lively. “This includes honey and caramel tones,” says Esposito. “It’s very flattering on pretty much all skin tones and gives a glowing, youthful appearance.”

Bring Back the ‘70s Hair
“People are beginning to embrace their natural waves and there are even several beauty blogs dedicated to natural hair. It’s a perfect look for summer since you won’t have to worry about humidity and it cuts down on styling damage,” explains Esposito of ‘70s-inspired looks.
In addition to the modern shag, another popular hairstyle is long, almost non-existent layers, with curtain bangs and heavy face framing, says Esposito: “This style makes your hair appear thicker while giving it movement and texture around the face.” Celebrities like Sophie Turner and Hilary Duff are fans of ‘70s-style hair.
Get Bangin' This Summer
If you’ve wanted to get bangs for a while, now would be a good time to hit the salon since bangs like wispy and curtain bangs (bangs that part in the middle) are in style. “It gives a fresh look to your haircut, without hiding your face,” says Esposito. This comes in handy during the really hot days since hair mixed with heat is a recipe for forehead breakouts.
If you do opt for a heavier look like trendy shag bangs, it’s important to wash your face often, says Esposito. “Use non-comedogenic face makeup, and use dry shampoo at the roots to absorb excess oil.”
While it’s clear that trends come and go, it’s still fun to embrace these ‘70s — and even ‘90s — summer trends for the moment. Who knows what could be next?
