Summer 2019 didn’t last nearly long enough, and while I’m sad to pack up my minimally used beach gear, I am also super psyched to jump into this fabulous fall season and embrace all of the exciting seasonal trends that come with it. Let’s scope out the trends you’ll be seeing everywhere this season. Here are the best skincare trends you need to know about.
Fall Skincare Trends You Need to Know About
CBD
CBD has become quite the mainstream ingredient in a wide range of consumables – from foods to salves to nutritional supplements – over the past few years. More recently, it has even been popping up in skincare, making it an exciting way for beauty junkies to try the CBD craze. Well known skincare manufacturers like Khiel’s and Peter Thomas Roth have come out with CBD-based oils and serums, while other manufacturers have formed solely for the purpose of creating whole CBD lines. It may be worth giving these new guys a try, but it should also be noted that being cautious is still important. With so much hype surrounding this trend, there may be brands that tout “CBD” on their labels without offering enough potency**.
Blue Light
Studies about sun damage continue to emerge, teaching us how integral daily sunscreen application is to our skin’s health. We can count our blessings to live in an age where we are readily aware of the damage unprotected exposure to the sun can cause and that we have precious SPF to help shield us. But what if that isn’t enough? Spoiler alert: It’s not because we also live in an age where smart technology, handheld and desktop devices are mere feet (or less) from our faces for most of our waking lives. These devices emit a different type of damaging ray known as blue light or HEV light (High Energy Visible). Awareness of this type of damage is relatively new, and as more scientific studies come out on the negative impact of HEV light, the more we are seeing that exposure to HEV light can cause damage similar to that of UV rays.
While sun-emitted HEV light disappears after dark, there is really no end to our exposure as long as our phones and computers are on. Thankfully, more high-end sunscreens are coming out with additional HEV protection added on. This is definitely an emerging trend you want to jump on and stay on! My current favorites include ZO’s Smart Tone Broad Spectrum SPF, Epionce’s Daily Shield Tinted SPF, and good ol’ SuperGoop with their Unseen Sunscreen. Fingers crossed that this particular sunscreen trend turns into an all-time moisturizer trend. SPF with HEV protection is all well and good during the day, but those of us typing up articles after dark need some of that precious protection in our night routine as well.
Collagen
While supplements have been around for quite some time, we’ve seen them get an upgrade that benefits skin needs. Vital Proteins is a leader of this trend thanks to the addition of Beauty Collagen™and Collagen Beauty Glow – both of which contain skin-loving ingredient hyaluronic acid. Personally, I’m loving the Watermelon Mint Beauty Collagen™. Collagen itself is a must-have since it helps to support healthy, hair, skin, nails and joints.**
Overnight Masks
Sleep masks – aka overnight masks – were first popularized by K-Beauty, but the beauty staple is reaching new heights stateside. A sleep mask is basically like an extra intense moisturizer, designed to be worn overnight to deliver extra awesome benefits as you sleep. Not to be confused with a sheet mask, a sleep mask typically comes in a jar and is a thicker consistency that delivers hydrating and regenerative benefits**. Sleep masks are a treat for your skin that can be used a couple nights a week in the final step of your evening routine. The allure: Get all those mega benefits packed into one step while you clock in a restful night’s sleep**. My sleep masks of choice? Glow Recipe’s Watermelon Glow Sleeping Mask, which delivers hydration and gentle exfoliation, and Laniege’s Water Sleeping Mask, which contains a patented skin-calming and antioxidant-rich apricot and evening primrose formulation. They both live on my nightstand for those nights when I know I’ll need a special pick-me-up in the morning.
With fall giving us a taste of that frigid Chicago winter, you can’t skip these luxuriously hydrating skincare trends.
