January is fast approaching and with that, of course, comes fitness resolutions. When new clients begin training, they always ask, “When will I see results from working out?” This is extremely individualized and depends on many factors. It’s not a one-size-fits-all situation.
The first thing to take into account is your starting point: your current size, physique and height. If I’m working with two clients – let’s call them Client A and Client B – this answer would be different for each person. Client A is 130 lbs. and 5’4”. If this person loses 10 lbs., the difference will be quite noticeable obviously based on her starting height and weight. She would most likely see a difference in measurements and perhaps even sizes.

If Client B is 5’11” and 170 lbs. and loses the same amount of weight, the difference will not be as obvious. She would be losing 10 lbs. from a 5’11” frame. That weight would be coming from back, arms, chest, calves, etc. Most likely for this reason, there will not be a huge difference in measurements or clothing size off a tall frame at that weight.
Measuring Your Level of Commitment
The second thing to be considered is the person’s level of commitment to their training and nutrition plan. You can hire the best trainer and the best nutritionist but if you’re not doing what they tell you, your results will reflect your choices and actions. A person whole-heartedly committed to their new will reap the rewards where as a person who barely follows their plan won’t be enjoying the same results.

Third, you have a person’s budget availability and schedule to consider. One person may have the time and money to work out with a top trainer five times per week, whereas another may only have two days per week to train on their own with little to no knowledge of what to do at the gym. No matter the situation, it’s critical to do the best you can with what you have. Don’t go to the gym and just wing it by completing random workouts. You’re not going to get results that way. Hire an online trainer to design a program plan for you to complete on your own at the gym. Another alternative is to use a free website with training and nutrition plans you can follow.
It Comes Down to What You Want
I think the most important takeaway is to realize that no matter what you do, the time will pass anyway. You can adopt a healthy new lifestyle today and start moving toward your goals and be in a different place physically and mentally whether that’s three months from now or a year from now. The other option is to do nothing and in three months or a year from now, you’ll be wishing you had started today. The decision is yours.
